The Power of Small Business Branding Through Private Labeling

by: Jake Mayer

The Power of Small Business Branding Through Private Labeling

Your Label Says A Lot About Your Business
A brand is a powerful tool in your hands, a visual image that encapsulates a perceived value associated with your company, product or service by customers and potential customers. As competition intensifies, small business owners are realizing the power of branding through private label as part of an ingenious business strategy. Owning your brand is not only an alluring marketing and sales tool, it makes good small business sense. Wholesalers of private label products offer resellers and diverse others the opportunity to build recognition for their own company and product, as well as develop customer loyalty. With a lead on identity and a secure on loyalty, new and repeat sales are sure to follow, given that your product meets consumer expectations. The bottom line is: You will drive your revenues and increase profits through the use of private labels.

Once thought of as a value-added, low cost substitute for higher priced name brands, private label brands were referred to as store or generic brands; remember the no name brand! Interestingly, the private label perception is blossoming in today’s marketplace as the upscale alternative to national brands. As burnt cream evolved into French crème brûlée, consumers now consider private label brands as an affordable extravagance. Associated with distinctive, premium quality products and services, private labels are now positioning as your own proprietary brand or personalized brand, and rightly so.

Private Label Brands Are Packed With Benefits

A private label packs numerous marketing and sales benefits into your product. The basics of any good marketing plan are simple: Increase your customer base, increase the frequency of repeat sales and increase the average expenditure, the question is… how? Designed to display and impress your image and developed around your target market, propriety label may be the answer.

Your own brand is what sets you apart from your competitors and builds brand loyalty. Differentiating your product as a unique brand also enables you to compete on non-price factors such as quality. A smart move for small business because typically, they cannot achieve sales volume levels to be a low price favorite.

Stocking name brand products does little to entice consumers into your brick and mortar or online store. National brands are widely distributed and can be purchased almost anywhere. A private label will bring customers to your place of business, as your brand is exclusive. An additional benefit is that of product awareness, every time a customer opens your private label product sitting on the counter top the customer is reminded where the product was purchased.

Small businesses do not have abundant resources to spend on large marketing and advertising campaigns like their national competitors. Your proprietary label, imprinted on an appealing package, is an excellent advertising item and channel. You gain exposure and get the word out about your business and product, requiring little effort outside your input in the label and package design. Using a private label is a cost effective method to market your small business.

Of course, customers will not rush back to your store and beat down the door for a label. Establishing the brand with a high quality product is essential for repeat sales. Generate trust in your brand by selecting a respected wholesaler who knows the product and the business well. To promote consumer purchasing the reseller must also perfect the private label to meet the desires and expectations of the target market.

Black Tea or Decadently Rich Chocolate Chai? You Decide

Let’s take a look at a fast growing, competitive segment of the beverage industry, tea, to see how the benefits of private label are put into practice. Once trailing far behind the specialty coffee market, tea is now surging in the popularity and so are the sellers. The trend is driven by consumer lifestyle shifts toward good health, luxury and pleasure. Specialty tea is forecasted to become a major portion of the tea industry. Demand is stimulated by the new products available as consumers seek extraordinary and exotic tea flavors.

It is essential reseller’s offer a quality product from a knowledgeable wholesaler supplier, as product choice can make or break a business. Working in partnership, the private label wholesaler and reseller will bring together knowledge, experience and creativity in the design of a captivating label and appealing package. With endless choices, from loose leaf to tins, the finally product is presented to exceed the reseller and final consumers expectations.

An up and coming leader in the national spa market, exhale spa promotes a whole body rejuvenating selection of services based upon the wisdom of traditional healing and movement therapies. To enhance the relaxing ambience of the spa, exhale serves their own signature tea blends, formulated and packaged by Lapis Teahouse, a provider of premium private label tea. Resellers turn to Lapis Teahouse (http://www.lapisteahouse.com) and other select wholesalers that offer both private label and custom blending services for a competitive advantage. Private label companies build trust in a brand by selecting and custom blending extraordinary teas for flavor, aroma, and quality. Exciting new products are designed to fit the customer’s unique needs and compliment their business image.
Private label producers serve a diverse customer base, and each benefit by selling a private label brand. From a nutrition center prescribing the health benefits of organic herbal tea, to an elegant teahouse serving a taste of luxury for tea connoisseurs, a brand can be developed to reflect and project your image. You don’t have to be a reseller to capitalize on the rewards of a unique identity. The private label extends into the service industry to enhance professional services and company ambience.

Small business branding through private labeling conclusively builds company and product recognition. Positioning your unique product through private label, aimed at your target market, results in an effective, low cost-effort marketing strategy. It is the solution to getting customers into your store and back again and again… If your company is competing in the beverage or any other industry by using other brands, consider the benefits of your own proprietary brand. No matter how you label it, small business branding through a private label wholesaler is powerful marketing!

Home Based Franchising

by: Shawn Price
Copyright 2010 Shawn Price

Is Home Based Franchising for you?

Do you desire Home Business Ownership but cringe at the thought of starting from scratch?

Possibly a Home based Franchise is your answer.

A Franchise is a business in which "... the franchisor, the owner and developer of the franchise system licenses [you] franchisees to use trademarks, service marks, logos, or advertising owned or developed by the franchisor." (International Franchising Association, Franchising basics).

With some franchise programs, the business operates using the Franchisor's brand name only.

Other programs are less restrictive and allow for the usage of both a trade name in addition to the franchisor's brand name.

Common to all franchise programs, the franchisee[ you] is responsible to pay the franchisor, advertising fees, initial fees, service fees, and or royalty fees.

You are responsible for payment whether your business is profitable or not.

Additionally, many franchisor's provide educational programs to franchisees before the inception of the business.

Often times, they've done demographic studies and other studies to ensure that you have greater odds of returning a profit.

Major Franchise Types

Unit Franchising

Is the most simple type of franchise in which the Franchisor grants the franchisee the right to operate a single operation at a specified location or within a particular territory.

Area Development Franchising

In accordance with a "development schedule", the franchisee agrees to establish a predetermined number of "unit franchises" within a particular territory.

Subfranchising/Master franchizing

Is quite similar to Area Development Franchising with the major difference being that the franchisor grants the subfranchisor the option of opening the unit franchises herself or selling the the franchises to third parties. (Common with International franchising)

Affiliate Franchising

This type of set up is typically used by an owner of an established business who decides to join/affiliate with a franchised chain.

This allows for the benefit of the franchises brand. This is common with many real estate.

NonTraditional

This type of set up is customized between the franchisor and the franchisee.

Franchises are not the same as Dealerships and distributorships

A dealership or distributorship differs from a franchise in that there is no FEE involved. Dealers purchase products usually from the manufacturer at wholesale prices.

Note however, that a dealership can become a Franchise IF a FEE is paid to the franchisor AND the distributor is dependent upon the franchisor's pay structure.

Considerations when buying a franchise

• There's a benefit to purchasing a franchise that is well known

• Will the franchisor provide ongoing education and support?

• Were demographic studies performed?

• How many of the franchises have closed operation? Why?

• Have you STUDIED the franchiser's Comprehensive Disclosure Statement? It's required by Law that prospective Franchisee's are provided Comprehensive Disclosure, a copy of the franchisor's Standard Franchise Agreement, Audited statements, a list of the names of all of the Franchisees, as well as a copy of all documents that require the franchisees' signing.

By law, each of the above must be provided at least 2 weeks prior to purchase date.

• I've heard the saying, "if you buy a McDonald's, be prepared to eat burger's for breakfast lunch and dinner." In other words, your business requires commitment.

Additional Sources of information

•Success Magazine

•International Franchise Association www.franchise.org

•Franchise Sales Press *Get this magazine since it is known for its focus on franchise opportunities. Further, they perform regular interviews with both franchisees as well as with franchisors.

•SBA Small Business Association

•Brokerage firms and analysts Since stock information on A public company is useful.

•Franchise Lawyer •Federal Trade Commission Public Reference Branch

•UFOC "Uniform Franchise Offering circular -- the material that is provided by law, by the franchisor to the qualified franchisee. This is likely the most telling of all information gathered.

•Attorney General's Office

•BBB located in the city of the Franchisor's headquarters.

•Your Banker should have access to the Dunn and Bradstreet Report on the particular Franchisor.

•Contact the franchisor's franchisee's listed in UFOC. *** Prepare a list of relevant questions prior to calling.

Purchasing a franchise usually equates to a reduction in investment risks since the" system" and Franchise name is established, training and ongoing support is provided, market research has been conducted... Conversely…

franchise ownership can be costly. Consequently, it is critical that you investigate the franchise thoroughly prior to purchasing.

There is a continual rise in the number of franchises. Obviously, there's a HUGE market for this method of business ownership. When approached methodically and practically, Franchise ownership can be Very lucrative and much simpler than beginning a business from the ground up.

Be wise and ensure that you conduct sufficient research prior to committment.

If you’ll need financial backing, then you will need to create a business plan. There’s a handy Business Plan workbook available at our site.

Getting Help and Advice on Starting a Business

by: Karen Walker

When you want to start a home business, it can be easy to feel alone, confused, and scared. The chances are that you don’t know anyone else who’s ever started a business, and you don’t even know who to ask if you get stuck. Here are a few things you ought to be looking at.

The Internet.

The Internet is a great resource for people who are thinking of setting up a home business – as well as all the articles you can find with practical advice, there are also many forums, where you can read about others’ experiences, and ask questions.

The Government.

Scary as it might seem to be getting advice on anything from the government, most governments go really out of their way to produce all sorts of easy-to-understand material on starting your own business. Encouraging you in business is a great way for them to both strengthen the economy and increase tax revenues.

Depending on your area, you might find that local government agencies are also keen to give you help and advice, and might even have some kind of ‘small business centre’ that you can visit.

Mentors.

Mentors are usually volunteers who think it would be nice to offer local businesses help and advice. They often have years of business experience, and can be really useful – if you find one, hang on to them.

Librarians.

Always willing to help and sadly neglected in our ‘wired’ age, you really should talk to a librarian. Libraries generally contain all sorts of business books and resources that they’ll be able to point you towards, and they’ll be more than happy to do research into obscure areas for you.

Lawyers.

Pricey as they might be, lawyers know all about starting businesses – they’ve almost certainly done it thousands of times over. It can be well worth paying for an hour of a lawyer’s time and just asking them every question you can think of.

Accountants.

A less expensive alternative to lawyers, accountants also know their stuff, especially (obviously) on the financial side. If you want your business to be profitable, you should take on board what your accountant tells you – and if you don’t have one, you should get one. By the time they’ve helped you navigate through all the tax mazes, they’ll almost certainly have made their fee back for you anyway.

Incubators and Investors.

If you think your business would be an attractive proposal to people who back businesses for a living, then you can try going to a ‘business incubator’ or some other kind of investor with your idea. If they like it, they’ll often have a quick process set up to get your company up and running as soon as possible.

Universities.

Here’s an interesting one: universities are full of business students. They’ve all spent ages learning about nothing but business, and many of them would just love to help get a real one off the ground – it’d look great on their CV, after all. Business students can be a great source of free help and advice, and they’ll probably even be thankful to you for letting them help out!

Teachers.

If you do a course to get a formal qualification in what you want to do before starting the business, you’ll probably find that your teacher is also a good resource on the business side of things. They’ll have had plenty of students starting businesses who’ve asked them similar questions, and they might even have prepared some material to give to anyone who asks for it.

Your Bank.

Traditionally, your bank would have been the first place you went if you were thinking of starting a business, but many people seem to ignore them nowadays. While they’re no replacement for accountants, most banks will offer you a ‘business advisor’ when you open a business account, and they can be especially helpful with the technical and financial elements of starting up.

Associations, Societies and Unions.

Whatever industry you’re thinking of entering probably has some kind of trade association, society or union. You should join as soon as you can, and take advantage of all the resources that they will almost certainly offer to people wanting to get started in their industry. After all, the more people who are in their industry, the more members they can get.

So you see, there’s no shortage of advice out there if you look for it.

Finding a Niche

by: Matt Bacak

If you don't find a niche market for the product or service you offer, you will have a difficult time being successful. Most newcomers who wish to do business on the Internet often market to everyone they can find with the expectation that everyone will do business with them. This is the same as throwing mud against the wall and hoping some of it will stick. They have not yet found their niche market.
What is niche marketing?
A niche market is composed of individuals and businesses that have similar interests and needs, which can be readily identified and that can be easily targeted and reached.
Finding a niche for your business means finding a great product or service for a highly targeted audience.
Here's the process to find your niche business
1. Find a niche product or service you are passionate about. This will greatly improve your chances of being successful. Why? Because it's the only way you're going to be able to devote the kind of time and effort to create a meaningful web site, build up the right traffic, generate worthwhile income, and enjoy what you're doing.
2. Choose a niche product you are knowledgeable about. Reflect on what skills, hobbies or products you know the most about. If you don't have the knowledge yet, then choose a niche product that you would love to promote, and then spend the necessary time to research it, so you can eventually become an expert in your marketing field.
3. Define your niche market - do the necessary research to see if there is a market for your niche product. To create a profitable business for your niche product, you need to ask yourself these questions:
a) Is there sufficient demand for it? - If you choose a field that is too broad it may be hard to stand out from the competition. For example, camping equipment could be your niche product. Well, unless you are a large corporation such as Sports Authority (a large retail store in my town), you won't stand out from the crowd. However, a more highly targeted niche product could be Coleman Camping Equipment.
b) Keyword research - use keyword tools such as the overture suggestion tool (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion) or word tracker (wordtracker.com) to find how many people are searching each month on keywords related to your niche product.

Here's an example:
According to overture (at the time of writing this article), the keyword phrase "camping equipment" was searched 76164 times in one month. If you do a search on Google.com for camping equipment you will find 1,610,000 web sites show up - heck, that's too competitive.
However "Coleman camping equipment" generated 1242 searches in one month according to overture. Google.com shows 93,200 competing websites. That's much better though still somewhat competitive.
Tip: Notice there are not many web sites (even the top ones), that have "Coleman camping equipment" in their titles. This is just one of the ways to obtain a high ranking on the search engines for your newly targeted web site. This will then provide lots of targeted traffic to your site.
c) Take a survey - you may already have products or services that you selling to your customers. If so, ask questions within your survey about what product or service would help your customers business. If it can help them save time by gaining more knowledge or automating tasks, you could have a winner.
d) Create Your Own Unique Selling Position (USP) - study your competition to find out what they emphasize about the product which makes them stand out from the crowd. Then decide on something that will make your business unique from the others. It could be something unique about the product (i.e. discount Coleman camping equipment) or you could choose a more highly defined target market (i.e. Boy Scout organizations and clubs throughout the USA that use Coleman's camping equipment).
4. Build and promote your web site - to develop a profitable web site for your niche product you need to create a number of informative pages that will not only attract visitors from the search engines, but inform and move them to purchase from your site.
Niche marketing is the key to developing a profitable business that will make you stand out from the crowd. By doing the necessary research and building an informative web site, you will become an expert in your niche marketing field.

Effective Public Speaking for Small Business Owners

by: Keith Longmire

Public speaking is comfortably the quickest and easiest way to improve your company visibility, establish yourself as an expert, get you face known and get businesses coming to you.

Most small business owners and managers fully recognise this yet even the thought of standing up in public to speak to a room full of strangers can evoke a somewhat nauseous feeling in many people.

Some of the most confident business people often do their best to avoid public speaking. But not taking advantage of every public speaking opportunity is a serious mistake.

Public speaking is great for your business in two main ways.

One - you gain face recognition, and
Two - it establishes you and your company as industry experts.

Let’s start with face recognition. This sounds like a simple thing, but don't discount its importance. Imagine you are at an industry trade show. You are side by side with another company in the exhibit hall. You sell basically the same product.

But you are delivering the keynote speech at the conference. Your picture, name and company is on each of the entry-way signs into the conference center.

Which company are attendees at the conference (who, by the way, are qualified prospects) likely to visit?

Odds are they will stop at your stand.

Even people who are just walking by may stop to talk to the person they saw speak at a conference session. Sometimes that's all the edge you need to make that lucrative sale.

The other reason they decide to stop is they recognise you as the industy expert. You must be. How else did you get invited to give the prestigious keynote speech? The prospects assume you know your business or you wouldn’t have been invited to speak at the conference.

This is true regardless of industry. If you are a psychologist with a local practice and people see you speak at a conference, or even at a local Rotary meeting, they will begin to see you as an industry expert. Should the occasion arise for that person to need to visit a psychologist, or to refer a colleague or friend, your name may come to mind simply because they’ve seen you before.

It is important, however, that if you decide to take public speaking engagements, that you deliver a good speech.

The good news is that you don't have to be perfect. In fact, usually public speakers do not have to be particularly good to be a great success. Your audience is usually more than half on your side. They want you to do well.

And providing you deliver good, solid content in a professional manner your audience will leave well satisfied.

But be prepared.

There is nothing worse than letting a prospect see you give a less than well prepared speech. If your lack of preparedness causes you to pause a lot, stumble over sections of presentation, or fumble with slides or other presentational aids, that will give you the air of incompetence just as surely as a well prepared and delivered presentation will give you the air of expertise.

Here are my top 7 tips for preparing presentations.

1. Choose 3 or 4 key topics - no more.
2. Make sure your have researched your content.
3. Write a script - you may not need to use it but the act of writing out a script is a great way for getting your thoughts and ideas straight.
4. Structure your speech around your core topics. Make sure you have a beginning, middle and end.
5. Make sure your presentational aids are prepared well in advance. Test them in the conference hall.
6. Rehearse - words that look great on paper often don't flow well when spoken aloud.
7. Rehearse again.

Just as much as being seen and heard can gain you recognition and business, being seen and heard giving a poor presentation can lose you business.

So you may want to look into taking a few public speaking courses to brush up on your skills.

Public Speaking may well seem like a lot of effort and trouble. It might even cause you enormous personal anxiety. But there is not doubt that it is worth the time and energy it takes any manager or business owner to give public speaking presentations.

There are few better ways to gain recognition for your name, company and to establish yourself as the obvious expert in your industry.

India’s business with US is 9.35 times greater than Pakistan’s

While the 2011 Pak-US bilateral trade volume stands at hardly $3.58 billion, the size of current business between India and the world super power rests at a relatively mammoth $33.49 billion or 9.35 times bigger than the goods traffic travelling between the Pakistani and American ports, an analytical research conducted by The News International reveals.

In 2001, the bilateral India-US trade volume was resting at just $13.49 billion, which thus means that during the last 10 years, the business ties between New Delhi and Washington DC have grown by approximately 2.5 times. In 2008, the India-US trade volume was resting at nearly $44 billion. (Reference: Latest 2011 United States Census Bureau figures)

On the contrary, the Pak-US trade volume in 2001 was hovering around the $2.79 billion mark only. Between 2001 and 2011, the Pak-US trade volume has grown by just 1.28 times to stand at $3.58 billion—-or at half the speed at which India has managed to make its business increase with America.

It goes without saying that it should have been the other way round, because between 2001 and 2011, Pakistan has been America’s key ally in the War against Terror-having received aid in excess of $18 billion from Washington DC.

However, Pakistan has lost $67 billion (apart from 36,000 precious lives) during the last 10 years due to rampant terrorism and this amount is 10 per cent more than the country’s total external debt liabilities of $60.116 billion. (Reference: Latest 2011 State Bank of Pakistan figures)

Dispelling another myth, Pakistan owed only $1.507 billion to the US in 2010, while the figure of outstanding Chinese loans had stood at $1.762 billion during the same year. (Reference: State Bank of Pakistan’s latest statistics)

The American loan payable is hence just 2.5 per cent of the net $60.116 billion external debt liabilities of Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistan owed $7.011 billion to Japan last year, $2.011 billion to France and $1.66 billion to Germany, which thus shows that the United States was the fifth largest lender to Islamabad in 2010, as far as lending from individual countries is concerned.

The extent of how much the US prefers India to Pakistan can also be gauged from the fact that in December 2006, the American Congress passed the Henry Hyde United States-India Peaceful Atomic Cooperation Act, which allowed direct civilian nuclear commerce with India for the first time in 30 years.

This legislation had in fact cleared the way for India to buy US nuclear reactors and fuel for its civilian use. In July 2007, the United States and India reached a historic milestone in their strategic partnership by completing parleys on the agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation, also known as the “123 Agreement.”

This agreement was inked on October 10, 2008. In March 2009, the Obama administration had sanctioned and cleared the $2.1 billion sale of eight military aircraft to India.

Coupled with a $5 billion agreement to provide other vital military equipment (including Boeing planes), these incentives for New Delhi were announced during President Obama’s November 2010 visit to the world’s largest democracy.

Obama had become only the second US President, after Richard Nixon in 1969, to undertake a visit to India in his first term in office.

He was also the second-ever US President to address a joint session of the Parliament of India. President Obama, during the course of his visit, had also declared the American support for India’s permanent membership of United Nations Security Council.

These accords had made the US emerge as one of the top three military suppliers for India, along with the likes of Israel and Russia.

This is how the April 2011 report of the prestigious 1916 US think-tank “Brookings Institute” had described these Indo-US deals: “During the trip, Obama announced that the United States would sell $5 billion worth of US military equipment to India, including ten Boeing C-17 military transport aircraft and GE 404 engines. Although the details are still being worked out, these and other contracts already in the works will propel the United States into the ranks of India’s top three military suppliers, alongside Russia and Israel. With India planning to buy $100 billion worth of new weapons over the next ten years, arms sales may be the best way for the United States to revive stagnating US-Indian relations.”

In 2005, President George Bush had granted India an unprecedented nuclear deal, offering to assist India’s civilian nuclear programme in contravention of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

According to the US Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, America also happens to be India’s largest investment partner.

The Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs says in its most recent report: “The United States is India’s largest investment partner, with a 13 per cent share. India’s total inflow of US direct investment was estimated at more than $16 billion through 2008. India’s external debt was nearly $230 billion by the end of 2008, up from $126 billion in 2005-2006. Foreign assistance was approximately $3 billion in 2006-2007, with the United States providing about $126 million in development assistance.”

History shows that Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), who is considered a key figure in the introduction of Hindu philosophies of Yoga to America and Europe, had actually laid the foundation stone of Indo-US relations in 1893 when he had captivated the audience at Chicago by introducing Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1893. Pakistan seeks joint ventures with Malaysia in agriculture

Pakistan and Malaysia  decided to effectively utilise various protocols and frameworks available under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to boost economic relations and broaden the scope of bilateral trade. The two countries agreed that while the bilateral trade had witnessed a steady increase since the operationalisation of the FTA in January 2008, there still existed a considerable untapped potential to enhance the two-way commerce and broaden the narrow range of products being traded between the two countries.
The consensus to work aggressively to forge business partnerships emerged at a day long Pakistan Malaysia Business Forum held  under the joint aegis of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the High Commission for Pakistan in Malaysia.
The event that drew nearly 100 leading Malaysian and Pakistani investors and businessmen for a day long exchange of business ideas also served as an ideal opportunity for productive networking and business matchmaking.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Forum, Pakistan’s Commerce Secretary Zafar Mahmood said Pakistan attaches great importance to economic and trade relations with Malaysia and a steady growth in the bilateral trade between the two countries is a reflection of the determination that exists on both sides to further deepen these relations.
He, however, opined that while a steady increase in bilateral trade was a source of satisfaction, both countries could take their economic relations to a new height by aggressively exploring opportunities for joint ventures in sectors such as agriculture and Halal industry which offered better returns and greater scope for growth given a growing demand for quality food and Halal products in the region.
He also underscored the need for addressing the trade gap.
Speaking on the occasion, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Dato’ Mukhriz Mahathir welcomed the holding of Pakistan Malaysia Business Forum which, he said, offered a good opportunity to the Malaysian companies to interact, network and build relationships with their Pakistani counterparts.
He conceded that trade and investment between Malaysia and Pakistan was still relatively low. “We continue to trade in a rather narrow range of products. There is, therefore, untapped potential to enhance two-way trade,” he said, adding “the role of the private sector is very crucial in implementing the trade and investment framework created by our governments”.
He also welcomed the setting up of the Malaysia Pakistan Business Council and hoped that the Council would actively advise on “how to avoid pitfalls and reduce start-up risks and facilitate entry of potential investors” in each other’s market.
Earlier, High Commissioner for Pakistan in Malaysia, Masood Khalid welcomed nearly 100 businessmen and investors representing major sectors of the Malaysian economy and hoped that the event would enable a fruitful interaction with the Pakistani counterparts with a view to identify new areas for potential collaboration and business partnerships.

JAGUAR Land Rover seeks Chinese production partner

JAGUAR Land Rover is in ''very intensive discussions'' with a leading Chinese car maker and government officials about forming a joint venture to produce its luxury cars in China.
A deal with a Chinese company would mark a historic moment for the British car maker, with Jaguars and Land Rovers being produced outside its traditional Midlands base.
Sales of the cars are soaring in Asia, and China accounted for more than 10 per cent of sales last financial year, when JLR made a record pre-tax profit of £1.1 billion ($A1.68 billion) and sold 245,000 cars.
Advertisement: Story continues below
Management of JLR and parent company Tata Motors have been eyeing a joint venture in China for months in order to save import costs on vehicles sold in the region.
Chief executive Ralf Speth said at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week that JLR was now in primary discussions with one company, although would not confirm its identity.
''I don't want to rush this kind of JV because it is important and the first one. It is in the biggest market on Earth for cars. Whenever you step in [to a partnership] it is difficult to be divorced and sometimes expensive. We can't afford this,'' he said.
It is understood that a deal could be in place by the end of the year, but regulatory clearance from the Chinese government could take another 12 months.
Chinese car makers with existing European joint ventures include SAIC and Geely.
Mr Speth also said ''nothing will change'' at JLR despite the departure of Tata Motors chief executive Carl-Peter Forster, due to what is understood to be a family illness.
Mr Speth and Mr Forster have overseen a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of JLR since they were appointed less than two years ago.
The company is investing £1.5 billion a year in product development, is planning to build a new engine plant in the UK and has hired an extra 3000 staff this year to keep up with demand. Mr Speth said sales were ahead of last year despite the global economic uncertainty.
Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Sons and the man who bought JLR, has made a rare public appearance at the Frankfurt show.
''The credit for the turnaround of Jaguar Land Rover goes to the management team and workforce of the company,'' he said. ''No single person can or should take credit for the improvement in the company's operations.
''The upturn in the company's performance commenced two years ago. The improvement reflects the changed market environment, the success of new products already in the pipeline and the enthusiasm and support of the management team and workforce.''

Korean company to invest US $ 15 mln in Pakistan

The Engineering Development Board (EDB) has persuaded a South Korean manufacturer of Iron and Steel products, Pohang Iron and Steel Company POSCO to invest in Pakistan. The company has signed joint venture agreement with Tuwairqi Steel Mill (TSML) for investing US$15 million in the DRI project of TSML by subscribing 15.3 per cent newly issued common shares. Subsequent to commercial operation of the DRI project, POSCO is keen on the forward and backward integration of the project by investing in the steel melting and mining sectors by increasing its shareholding in TSML upto the threshold level of 50 per cent.
The move will eventually result in huge foreign equity inflow to build a state-of-the art integrated in the country along with creation of tremendous employment opportunities.
It may be recalled that four member delegation of the POSCO visited Pakistan in March 2011 to explore the possibility of initiating the steel manufacturing business in Pakistan.
The delegation was given detailed presentations about the current status of local steel industry and future growth prospects by Engineering Development Board (EDB).
They showed their satisfaction at the growth potential of steel manufacturing industry in Pakistan. Later a visit of the delegation to Tuwairqi Steel Mill was also arranged by EDB.
A two member team of TSML accompanied the Chief Minister of Sindh during his visit to South Korea as a follow up of the discussions between the two steel manufacturers.
After conducting due diligence, POSCO has finally agreed to conclude a formal joint venture agreement with TSML.
A spokesman of Engineering Development Board explained that per capita steel consumption in Pakistan is very low as compared to other countries and is around about 38 kg per capita. In 2009, the per capita steel consumption in Pakistan was 35 kg as compared to 384 kg in China, 225 kg in Saudi Arabia, 123 kg in Egypt, 228 kg in Iran, 432 kg in Kuwait and 985 kg in Qatar.

Piaggio to start bigger bikes business in India

Italian automaker Piaggio is looking at a fatter portfolio of super-and-sport-bikes in India as it gears up for the launch of the iconic Vespa scooter brand early next year.

After starting limited-volume import of its Aprilia range early this year, the company is now considering a full-fledged motorcycle business in India, by bringing in other brands like Derbi, Gilera and Moto Guzzi. "We are carrying out a detailed feasibility study of the Indian motorcycle market to explore its potential and understand how we should enter, if we decide to do so," Ravi Chopra, CMD of Piaggio Vehicles India,
Piaggio is setting up a factory for two-wheelers at Baramati in Maharashtra, and Chopra said the company views India as an "opportunity". "We want to have a bigger share across various product segments."

Kingdom Tower world's tallest tower

The record for the world's tallest tower is set to be broken yet again... this time by the Bin Laden family.
The new skyscraper will measure one kilometre high and will be located in Saudi Arabia. The tower will outdo Gulf neighbour Dubai, which inaugurated its own record-breaking skyscraper the 828m Burj Khalifa less than two years ago.
The Saudis awarded a more than $1 billion contract for a spire, to be named the Kingdom Tower. It will have a Four Seasons hotel, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and offices, encompassing, in all, about half a million square metres.
Kingdom Holding Co, the investment firm headed by billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, said it signed a $1 billion deal with the Saudi Binladen Group to build Kingdom Tower on the outskirts of the Red Sea city of Jeddah.
The Saudi construction giant is owned by the family of Osama bin Laden. The family disavowed the slain al-Qaeda terror group leader years ago.
"We intend Kingdom Tower to become both an economic engine and a proud symbol of the Kingdom's economic and cultural stature in the world community,'' Talal Al Maiman, a board member of KHC and the Jeddah Economic Co, a KHC-affiliate that signed the deal with the Binladen Group, said.
"We envision Kingdom Tower as a new iconic marker of Jeddah's historic importance as the traditional gateway to the holy city of Mecca.''
The tower, designed by Chicago-based Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, is the first phase of the planned Kingdom City, a sprawling, $20 billion, two-square mile urban development project first announced in 2008 as the global financial crisis was squeezing world markets.
It is one of several ambitious mega-ventures in the kingdom.
In June 2009, KHC signed a deal with Dubai-based Emaar Properties to develop and oversee the construction of Kingdom City and Kingdom Tower. Emaar, which is partly owned by Dubai's government, is the developer of the tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa.
Alwaleed's proposed skyscraper would shatter the record for Burj Khalifa, which has 160 livable floors and includes a boutique Armani hotel.
At 828 metres, Burj Khalifa is not only the tallest building but also the tallest free-standing structure in the world. By comparison, the tallest building in the US, the Willis Tower in Chicago, stands at 442 metres, although counting its antenna towers it rises to 527 metres. The One World Trade Centre tower being built in New York will measure 541 metres with its antenna spire (417m without). It's due for completion in 2013.
The Binladen company is developing a seven-tower complex in the holy city of Mecca that includes what is billed as the world's largest clock, set on a four-faced tower.
Saudi Arabia took a key step forward  in its plan to build the world's tallest tower and outdo Gulf neighbor Dubai, which inaugurated its own record-breaking skyscraper less than two years ago.
By comparison, the tallest building in the United States, Willis Tower in Chicago, rises 1,451 feet — plus the 278-foot antenna towers that top it.
The One World Trade Center, now being built in New York City, will measure 1,776 feet with its antenna spire. It's due for completion in 2013.

"We will increase the production of the second plant from 70,000 units to 1,20,000 units to shorten the waiting period for Etios and meet future demand of Liva," Nakagawa said

Huawei Introduces New MediaPad Tablet

Technologies Co., China’s largest phone-network equipment maker, introduced its second line of tablet computers in eight months, as the company expands its push into consumer markets.

Huawei’s new MediaPad tablet with 7-inch screen will run Google Inc.’s Android Honeycomb 3.2 operating system, Victor Xu, chief marketing officer of the company’s device business unit, said at a press conference.

Chief Executive Officer Ren Zhengfei is broadening offerings of devices such as smartphones and tablet computers to maintain sales growth amid slower demand for its traditional phone-network gear. The thrust into consumer markets, along with a drive to expand business-computing services, aims to triple annual sales to about $100 billion in the next five to 10 years, Shenzhen-based Huawei said in April.

Apple Inc.’s iPad currently dominates the global tablet market. Competition from new entrants will cut Apple’s share of the market for the device to about 50 percent next year, from almost 100 percent when the Cupertino, California-based company began selling the iPad a year ago, IHS ISuppli said in April.

Huawei had introduced the 7-inch Ideos S7 running the Android system at a Beijing trade show in October. Huawei’s S7 tablet and an updated S7 Slim announced in February are already on sale in Europe and Asia.

The MediaPad will be sold globally and will have more than six hours of battery life, according to the statement. The device comes pre-installed with software to operate the social networking sites of Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc., it said.

China, Russia Vow to Quadruple Trade This Decade

A $1 trillion gas deal of the century was to be signed  in St. Petersburg, Russia.Chinese President Hu Jintao, on a visit this day to St. Petersburg said that China and Russia set a goal of increasing trade fourfold during this decade.

As Russian President Dmitry Medvedev nodded approvingly, Hu told an international gathering of corporate executives that the two leaders have set a goal of $200 billion in bilateral trade by 2020.

Medvedev also spoke glowingly of the growing economic partnership between the two neighbors.

Last year, China displaced Germany as Russia’s largest trading partner. Twenty years after borders opened following the collapse of the Soviet Union, 3 million people from China and Russia now visit each other’s country each year.

Setting a bold trade goal served to distract attention from their failure to sign a massive gas deal. For one month, the leaders' aides had been predicting that Hu would sign the deal during his visit to Russia.

Asia analyst Bobo Lo said, “I was pretty surprised that they didn’t come up with some kind of face-saving gas agreement in time for Hu Jintao’s visit.”

In the deal, China would buy as much as $1 trillion worth of Siberian gas from Russia over the next 30 years, starting in 2015. The amount of gas would be equal to almost half the gas that Russia currently sells every year to Europe.

In a last-minute sales effort on Thursday night, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, often considered Russia’s top negotiator, took the Chinese president on a personal tour of Gazprom, the Russian state gas company.

Talks started 10 years ago. The sticking point remains price.

China is developing shale gas at home, is buying pipeline gas from Turkmenistan and is importing liquefied natural gas from Australia.

Russia knows that Chinese gas consumption may grow to match all of Europe’s consumption by 2035. China will have no choice, the Russians say, but to turn to Siberia.

On the standoff, Lo said, "Both the Russians and the Chinese believe they are in a strong negotiating position.”

China already has announced plans to increase coal imports from Russia and to double its oil imports from Russia.

Russia’s excitement over the China’s leader's visit reflects reversed roles of the two neighboring giants.

Fifty years ago, Russia was the top foreign aid donor to China. Now, China’s economy is five times the size of Russia’s. In a recent survey by Price Waterhouse Coopers, Russian business leaders listed China as their number-one growth area. For Chinese business leaders, Russia did not figure among the top 10.

The conference goal was for Medvedev to tell the world that Russia is open for business. Addressing a hall filled with 1,000 international participants, he declared, "We are not building state capitalism.”

He went on to say, “My choice is different. Private entrepreneurship and private investors should reign in the Russian economy.”

Medvedev cited liberalizing steps - speeding up the selling of state companies, cutting bureaucratic demands for visas and construction permits, and joining the World Trade Organization by the end of this year.

Markets, he said, are like parachutes - they only work when they are open.

This liberalizing rhetoric was music to the ears of his business audience. But Russia has presidential elections in March.

When the next economic forum rolls around, this time next year, no one knows who will be sitting in the Kremlin as president of Russia.

Investors in Dubai urged to register online

Investors can skip the queues and avoid processesing fees at Dubai government departments by registering online to get approval to start a business or renew their licences.

The DED launched two new e-service initiatives Wednesday allowing business owners and investors, who have a UAE visit or residence visa, to get tentative government approval to start a business in Dubai or renew an existing licence online — from anywhere in the world.

Applicants seeking initial approval to start a business can upload the necessary documents and pay business fees by credit card or through select banks on the DED website.
The initiatives come as part of a DED plan to move away from physical transactions at their offices to offering all services online, said Mohammad Shael, chief executive of the Business Registration and Licensing Sector at DED.

"We are now in transition. We will stop the manual processes when online services are perfected 100 per cent and people are used to it. The target [for this move] depends on the number of licences processed online."

The e-services will result in some cost savings for the government in the long run, he said. Assuming nine per cent growth in the next five years, this would require doubling the registration capacity and opening different branches.
"In ten years we would need an army of registers. That's what we don't want to do," he said, adding that human capital should be moved from registering people to interacting with investors and selling Dubai as an investment destination.

Using e-services, applicants can avoid the Dh560 per transaction charged at the DED offices.

There are no processesing fees for the online services and no surcharges for paying by credit card, Shael added.

The DED has also partnered with three business centres and Al Tamimi and Company law firm to provide business registration and licensing services during non-working hours. The DED closes at 2.30pm and the business centres would operate until 9pm, he said. About 95 per cent of DED services are available onlineAsked if the practice of auditing the documents submitted online after granting initial approvals would increase the risk of fraudulent companies setting up, he said: "Since the DED started in 1992, statistics say 85 to 87 per cent of businessmen who set up in Dubai are genuine. Only a small percentage are fraudlent, we can't punish the majority for the minority... the risk won't stop us from enhancing our electronic services," he told Gulf News.

The number of new companies that set up in Dubai reached 5,684 from January to May this year, according to Mohammad Shael, chief executive of the Business Registration and Licensing Sector.

There has been a reduction in real estate-related activity but a parallel increase in retail, food and beverages, luxury goods, electronics and services sectors, he said.
The number of new licences is expected to rise five to eight per cent this year on the back of falling rentsi, he added. But 2010 alone saw a growth of 18 per cent in new companies coming here.

There are currently 190,000 companies in Dubai registered with DED, excluding those in the free zones, he said.

All business tenancy contracts must be attested by RERA starting July 1, according to the DED.

"This is to save the rights of both parties, the tenants and the business owner," said Shael.

This covers only business contracts and not residential, he said.

Malaysian firm to Invest in Energy Sector

Malaysian investors and businessmen have vast opportunities for investment in Pakistan's energy sector given a massive gap between demand and supply with power shortage reaching 7000MW at peak hours in the current summer, said Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Malaysia Masood Khalid.
He was addressing a ceremony here in Malaysia upon an agreement reached between Malaysia's Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) unit TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd (TNB Remaco) and Pakistan's Laraib Energy, an offshoot of HUB Power Company, the ceremony held here in Malaysia.
"Our system is falling short of meeting the demand which comes as a good opportunity to overseas investors, especially those from Malaysia, to come and invest aggressively in this sector to help meet growing energy needs of Pakistan," the high commissioner said.
Under the agreement, TNB Remaco will provide services worth $14.1m (RM43m) for the operation and maintenance of 84MW New Bong Escape Hydroelectric Power Complex being built at a cost of $235 million on the Jhelum River in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The services would be provided for an initial period of five years with an option of extending it for another seven years. The 15-month mobilisation period for the project is likely to commence in August this year.

China Food Costs Push Inflation to 5.5% in May

China's inflation rebounded in May to its highest level in nearly three years, pushed up by stubbornly high food prices, even as interest rate hikes and other controls are cooling the overheated economy.

The National Statistics bureau said Tuesday that consumer prices rose 5.5 percent over a year earlier, driven by an 11.7 percent jump in food costs. That was up from April's 5.3 percent rate and exceeded March's 32-month high of 5.4 percent.

The figure was in line with economists' forecasts, but well above the government's 4 percent target for the year.

The government reported Monday that bank lending fell in May, indicating that repeated interest rate hikes and increases to reserve requirements may finally be reining in the excess lending that has helped drive prices higher.

But food prices have remained high, as drought and other weather disasters have decimated crops in wide parts of the country. Rising consumer demand is outstripping food supplies, while a bank lending boom spurred by Beijing's response to the 2008 global crisis has further inflated demand for key commodities.

Mindful of inflation's role in eroding the economic gains that underpin their claim to power, China's communist leaders have declared taming prices a top priority.

Violent protests have become frequent in recent years but the past few weeks have been particularly turbulent, with bombings and street demonstrations from Inner Mongolia in the north all the way to Guangdong in the south.

Though the triggers for the events varied, most have been driven by resentment over social inequality, abuse of power and suppression of legitimate grievances. Surging prices for food and other basic necessities have added to those frustrations.

While seeking to impose social "harmony" and cracking down on dissent, the leadership has sought to steer economic growth from the sizzling 9.7 percent rate in the first quarter to a more sustainable level.

Beijing has hiked interest rates four times since October and ordered companies to hold down prices. So far, inflationary pressures have offset those efforts, but economists say the pace of increases has slowed and they expect prices to moderate in coming months.

May's price increase was the fastest since July 2008, when inflation clocked in at 6.3 percent. It peaked at 8.7 percent in February 2008 but fell back under the shock to export demand from the global crisis.

Food prices are heavily weighted in China's calculation of its consumer price index and as supplies rebound during the summer months, that pressure should ease, economists say.

"Barring any further shocks to food supply, headline inflation should drop to beneath 3.5 percent by the end of 2011," Mark Williams, senior China economist at Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.
